Additive Manufacturing significantly reduces material waste, minimizes production time, limits the inventory of raw material and the number of parts needed for an assembly. Many innovative and lifesaving products have already been manufactured and supplied to hospitals during this Covid-19 crisis. The objective of the mission is to redefine the manufacturing processes in industries, develop sustainable additive technologies and integrate modern tools such as Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence to re-engineer the manufacturing process.
Smart Technology for Precision Farming
Farming is the first and prime occupation of human beings yet has never become obsolete. Prevalence of water scarcity and non-availability of scientific techniques has made this occupation one of the most neglected in India. With the advent in Industrial revolution (Industry 4.0) and Information Communication Technology, the agriculture sector has witnessed a major come-back. The need for usage of modern technologies like Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence, Block Chain, Machine Learning, Robotics and Automation for converting the Conventional Agriculture to Digital Agriculture is being explored and implemented. The mission envisages development of IoT & AI based Smart Farming Systems for monitoring the climatic adaptations, soil health, plant health, pest and disease infestations using sensors and finally create a holistic knowledge ecosystem through training, Research & Development and outreach & consultancy.
Small Satellite Technology Mission
Small satellites, a new age technology in space missions, has considerably enhanced the range of possible space missions by substantially lowering the cost to access space. KITS has become part of this world mission by joining hands with Technical University, Berlin, Germany. The team at KITS is in the process of developing a small satellite to be launched into the lower earth orbit to monitor the movements of elephants and other wildlife in the Western Ghats. The acquired satellite data is expected to help the forest department prevent untoward incidents and avoid man-animal conflicts.
Green and Sustainable Manufacturing
Manufacturing being an engine of a country’s economy, it is essential that the manufacturing processes minimize waste and reduce the environmental impact for sustainable development. Effluents from manufacturing processes are the second most reason for the pollution and global warming. The mission aims at developing technologies and processes that minimize the consumption of toxic materials in all manufacturing technologies. The mission also focuses on maximum utilization of renewable energy resources, converting waste into sustainable energy and develop products/methods to minimize hazardous wastes.
Data Analytics & Block Chain Mission
Using the two emerging technologies Blockchain and Big Data, this mission aims at mastering the Cryptocurrency ecosystem along with operational and analytical big data technologies and also using tools in statistics and mathematics. It enables the students to take on the roles of Big data Engineer, Data Scientist, Cryptocurrency Analyst, Cryptocurrency Developer, Full Battery Developer to name a few.
Green Energy Technology Mission
Fossil fuels, such as coal, oil and gas that account for nearly 80% of the primary energy consumption in the world, are being depleted day by day. This has compelled us to focus our attention towards renewable energy sources and technologies, such as solar, wind, geothermal, ocean, biomass, electrochemical power sources and fuel cells to provide clean & green energy with low emissions. The mission incorporates modern tools like Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence along with nanotechnology to re-engineer the Green Energy Technology program.
Cyber Security Knowledge Mission
The pioneering technologies of internet of things, cloud storage, artificial intelligence and data science have made our dependence on the cyber world irreversible. This dependency on the cyber world has opened new avenues for data breach and has made the cyber world vulnerable to crimes and attack. KITS has launched this new mission to secure cyber space and monitor potential attacks by adopting essential technologies in building and protecting systems using cyber security tools with required automation, machine learning and threat intelligence.
Millets for Nutrition Mission
Millets are the "poor" counterparts of rice and wheat, due to their ability to grow under adverse conditions of temperature and rainfall. However, these are a rich source of many bioactive nutrients. A regular consumption can help to overcome malnutrition among majority of our Indian population. When appropriately processed, they can be prescribed for diabetics, celiac patients, expectant mothers, infants and the people at large. The objective of the mission is to popularize the concept of millet consumption amongst every section of society and develop technologies for processing of millets, in every possible form.
Drone Technology for Agricultural Mission
Agriculture being the backbone of Indian economy, it has to be supported with emerging tools and one such tool is drone technology. Drones are being used for GIS mapping and other related works, having a potential to solve several problems in Agriculture. KITS has made it a mission to develop Drones for scouting lands and crops, inspecting weeds, monitoring and management of crops and monitoring and managing the grazing areas and health of livestock.
Vaccinology for Viral Diseases Mission
There has never been a better time for invention, innovation and discovery in the field of virology and our lab is focusing its attention and resources on developing cost effective and rapid diagnosis and treatment for this Novel SARS Coronavirus (Covid-19) in tune with the vision of the university – Finding Solutions to Human Problems. We combine expertise from the fields of molecular biology, immunology, phytochemistry and nanotechnology. The various aspects of virology such as screening of antiviral agents and generation of antibodies against viruses and microbes as a therapeutic and diagnostic option. Currently our lab works on generation of a screening platform for anti-viral agent against Japanese Encephalitis virus and Dengue Virus.

Isotope applications have occupied a substantial role in enhancing the quality of human life. The objective of this mission is to develop methods of calibration and data correction for laser stable isotope spectroscopy for accurate and precise data, production of industrially useful energy enriched chemicals, to produce 13C labeled plant material to trace storage and loss of plant-derived C in soils, informative snapshot of an organism’s physiology, reaction kinetics and theragnostic.

Wetland Conservation Mission
Wetlands are the most productive ecosystems that balance the existence of life on earth. KITS has initiated a mission to conserve the wetlands and to protect the biodiversity of the nature. The mission aims to support the restoration of wetlands with improved water quality, wildlife habitat and biodiversity. This helps in maintaining the surface water flow during dry and wet months and also in moderating climate change through carbon sequestration.
The Water Institute - Centre of excellence by the Department of Agriculture of KITS, Depts. of Civil Engineering and Biotechnology together have skilled expertise in executing wetland & biodiversity projects. At present KITS is executing a consultancy project towards conservation and management of Point Calimere Ramsar site in collaboration with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), Germany and Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), India.
Stem Cell Research Mission
KITS is in pursuit of scientific knowledge to identify the potential technologies for novel regenerative treatments. The objective of this mission is to solve problems related to health and develop medicines in the areas of neurodegenerative diseases, bone regeneration, Cancer treatment, AI based integration into cellular therapies.

Food Security faces challenging situations at times of Global disasters and calamities like Covid-19 pandemic. Many nations go hungry with scarcity of Food production and inadequate food supply. According to FAO, more than 800 million people across the globe are already suffering from hunger. In the prevailing Indian context, there is great need for innovative solutions to store perishable food commodities, processing and production of safe and wholesome food at affordable cost and mitigating problems related to malnutrition. KITS has embarked on this mission to pursue research and develop technologies and products; to tackle problems related to food security.

A smart building is a new form of building that promotes the environment and facilitates the efficient management of resources in order to maximize the effectiveness of end users. It is the mission of Karunya to create a safer and productive environment for the occupants with the aid of advanced automation technology, improving the energy efficiency of the building system and developing a sustainable environment in the infrastructure systems. AI, IoT, Sensor systems are some of the tools used for the application.
Nanotechnology for Healthcare & Vaccinology Mission
The 'Nanotechnology for Healthcare and Vaccinology' mission hinges on the search for newer materials and devices for diagnosis and treatment of diseases in two major possible ways: (i) Discovery of new materials against chronic diseases and (ii) Mitigating economic and clinical burden through the replacement of existing tools with cheaper and more efficient ones. The following are the objectives: to design newer and effective nanomaterials for targeted and sustained drug delivery, better efficacy of cancer drugs, new nanoformulations against bacterial and viral diseases, alternative-medicine-combined with nanofibers–as drug-eluting implants and patches, anti-biofilm nanomaterials, and non-invasive diagnostic kits based on nanomaterials. Our collaborators are leading scientists of University of Rhode Island, USA; University of Udine, Italy; Universidad Católica de Murcia (UCAM), Spain; Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, Germany; Moscow State University, Russia; National Dong-Hwa University, Taiwan.
Machine Learning Technologies for Societal Problems Mission
The digital world generates a huge amount of data in every sector. These complex heterogeneous data encompasses valuable hidden information. The Machine Learning (ML), one of the most influential technologies of the world enables the computers to discover valuable patterns from these voluminous data to take smart and timely decisions with minimal human intervention. ML manifests itself in many advanced fields like detecting cancer, creating new drugs, self-driving cars, smart farming, wearable devices, etc., the application of these technologies on societal problems can provide cost and time effective and environmentally friendly solutions.
Smart Vehicle Mission
The need of the hour is to design and develop vehicles with multiple energy sources, storage options, drives, smart sensors, optimal aerodynamic design, self- diagnostics and self-healing capabilities for the future generation. In this perspective, KITS has implemented a mission to establish a strong base of theoretical and applied research knowledge for future transportation systems. The mission aims at exploring newer energy sources for vehicle, modeling and optimization of smart vehicles, intelligent drive trains for vehicles, sensors and actuators that can communicate with drivers, self-driven cars using Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, smart infotainment, internet of cars, special vehicles for applications like healthcare, agriculture, surveillance, combat and mass transportation.
Water Treatment and Desalination Mission
Next to food crisis, water scarcity is increasing at an alarming rate decreasing the per capita annual availability of water in the country. 20 different types of water problems and locations requiring necessary interventions have been identified by the Government bodies and experts for establishment of treatment facility. Many parts of the world are currently approaching day zero essentially because of improper management of water resources. A mission which will protect water from contaminants and make it potable is being carried out by KITS for nearly a decade. Therefore the present mission focuses on providing simple yet appropriate cost-effective solution for integration of different treatment modalities available for potable and gray water and development of Nano biomaterial integrated Artificial Intelligence and IoT based sensors to solve water crisis in Agriculture and other industries.
Robotics in Everyday Life Mission
Machines are replacing men to perform complex, hazardous and monotonous jobs. A new class of technocrats are required in the field of technology to invent newer machines, build them and train them to perform such humongous tasks. A mission that caters to the need of the market has been initiated. It aims at designing and developing machines that can take care of the complex jobs of humans, implement innovative and creative ideas in robot design, control and programming. A collaboration with National & International Experts, the leaders in industry in the relevant domain, has made this mission possible to build robots that makes life easier.
Satellite and GIS Application Mission
GIS and remote sensing technologies have now become part and parcel of everyday life. Starting from simple navigation tool to high end data analysis of satellite imageries for predicting floods, earthquakes, spreading of pandemic diseases, etc., GIS has revolutionized modern-day living. The crux of the mission is to address the environmental issues/concerns by means of analyzing data for spatial oriented applications to handle emergency operations during disaster management and natural calamities by using GIS mapping and digitization of data related to various agencies.

The world is becoming smarter day by day and our cities are moving towards smart infrastructure. KITS aims at developing the entire urban eco-system, which is represented by the four pillars of comprehensive development: institutional, physical, social and economic infrastructure. The main purpose of the smart city mission is to drive economic growth and improve the quality of life of people by enabling local area development and harnessing technology that leads to smart outcomes. Application of Smart Solutions will enable cities to use technologies such as IoT, Data Science, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, to improve infrastructure and services.
Indigenous and Herbal Medicine
Indian Indigenous and Herbal Medicine holds promising cure for many ailments, prevention of several diseases and could foster health care benefits for unique health challenges of the 21st century. The importance of Indigenous Herbal Medicine (IHM) is brought to limelight by KITS in launching an offshoot of its research with a mandatory mission to accomplish its tasks and goals. The mission aims at creating kiosk and digital repository on indigenous herbal medicine, establish medicinal garden, self-health care models and explore new technologies to synthesize herbal drugs.

Technology Mission for Rural Development
The rural community of India has been deprived of basic hygiene, fundamental education, infrastructure and essential livelihood. The mission therefore ensures effective use of available resources to improve infrastructure and livelihood of the people of rural India. The mission aims at analyzing the needs of the rural Community and offer appropriate technology to augment healthcare, provide access to clean drinking water, make provisions for biogas energy systems, employ harvesting technologies for agriculture and provide the know-how for conversion of waste into energy. The mission will also focus on creating self-employment for women and increase the per capita income of rural families.
Medical Devices Mission
The mission aims to develop indigenous technology solutions for a significant and meaningful impact on patients’ lives and their healthcare. Medical Devices such as prosthetics, ventilators, hearing aids and several diagnostics are in constant need in our country owing to our large population. Although they are available, the devices are often imported and expensive. Therefore the primary objective of the mission is to develop technologies and medical devices that are affordable to the common man. The staff and students of the mission team will develop cost effective devices for some of the prevalent diseases and disorders such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, orthopaedic and neurological problems in the community and rehabilitate them using AI, ML and AR-VI approaches with the support of Samiti for Education Environment Social and Health Action (SEESHA). Efforts for better Diagnosis, Therapy and Rehabilitation that can feed into the health care system of the Country using latest technologies like IoT and Telemedicine are also planned in this mission.
