ABOUT MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
The Mechanical Engineering at Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences received accreditation from the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) in 2018. Renowned for its academic and research excellence, the division specializes in Design & Manufacturing Engineering, Material Sciences & Thermal Management, Renewable Energy, Metallurgy, and Mechatronics.
The Mechanical Engineering Division nurtures students, fostering the development of technical expertise, innovation in product design, the filing of patents, and the cultivation of leadership qualities. The Mechanical Engineering curriculum has been enhanced by integrating cutting-edge technologies, including Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Analytics, Robotics, and Automation. RESEARCH
The Mechanical Engineering Division houses five state-of-the-art Research Centers equipped with advanced tools and precision instruments, providing students with the resources needed to conduct research and innovate new products. At these Centers, students engage in the design, development, and testing of their projects. Some notable research activities include the development of heat pipes for electronic cooling applications at the Center for Research in Materials Science and Thermal Management, the exploration of anti-ballistic materials at the Centre for Research in Metallurgy, the creation of a novel fluid for cooling cutting tools at the Centre for Research in Design and Manufacturing, the adoption of biomass waste-to-energy technology at the Centre for Research in Renewable Energy, and the development of a specanoscope - a medical device for cervical cancer screening - at the Centre for Research in Additive Manufacturing. These represent the ongoing research initiatives within the division.
FUNDED PROJECTS
Substantial contributions from government funding agencies have played a pivotal role in advancing research, resulting in the conferral of 56 Ph.D. degrees and the active pursuit of doctoral degrees by 70 scholars within the Division. Currently, the Division oversees five ongoing funded projects, totaling Rs. 12.4 crores:
Development of Flexible Heat Pipes for Space Applications by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Government of India.
High-performance integrated two-stage electrochemical technology for water recovery from electroplating effluent, featuring real-time monitoring and control systems, supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India.
Design of a 2 TPD Rotary Kiln Gasification Pilot Plant with high CV syngas production, funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India.
Development of an IoT-Based Magnetorheological Foam Damper to Control Tool Vibration, supported by AICTE - Research Promotion Scheme (RPS), Government of India.
Design and Development of Smart Steps for Elderly or Differently Abled People to Travel Safely and Comfortably in Public Vehicles, sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India.
Experimental Investigation of A Novel Low Temperature Med Desalination Technology, sponsored by Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) under Deep Ocean Mission (DoM), Government of India.
Development of an Eco-Friendly Sustainable Technology – A Pilot Plant to Recycle Non-Ferrous Metallic Waste Scraps sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India.
PATENTS
The Mechanical Engineering Division encourages students to develop products and publish patents as an outcome of their project work. Currently the division has 44 patents published and 14 patent granted by both faculty and students
